How to interpret results

  • Bigger units give smaller numbers: 1 km21\ \mathrm{km^2} is a million square meters, so kilometer values look tiny.
  • For land, hectares are close to 2.5 acres: 1 ha2.47 ac1\ \mathrm{ha} \approx 2.47\ \mathrm{ac}.
  • If a result looks absurdly large or small, you probably have the dropdown set to an unexpected unit — switching it re-reads the same area.

Two special units worth understanding

The soccer field reference uses a conventional pitch of 105 m×68 m=7,140 m2105\ \mathrm{m} \times 68\ \mathrm{m} = 7{,}140\ \mathrm{m^2}. Real pitches vary, so treat this as a ballpark visualization, not a precise standard.

A circular mil is the area of a circle with a diameter of one mil ( 103 in10^{-3}\ \mathrm{in}), which is how wire cross-sections are traditionally quoted:

Why the hectare exists

Farming and land records needed a convenient middle ground between the small are and the huge square kilometer. The hectare answers with exactly 10,000 m210{,}000\ \mathrm{m^2} — about 2.47 acres — which makes it the standard unit for agricultural land across most of the world.

Circular mils in electrical work

Because wire is round, electricians quote cross-section by the area of a circle one mil in diameter rather than a square mil. Doubling the diameter quadruples the circular-mil area, which is why AWG tables climb in predictable steps.
