Why the au was invented
The au grew out of the distance between Earth and the Sun, which for centuries was measured through solar parallax and refined with radar and spacecraft telemetry. Because Earth's orbit is slightly elliptical, the exact Earth–Sun distance changes through the year — so in 2012 the IAU stopped chasing the measurement and simply fixed the unit at , giving every astronomer one stable number.
