Large number names follow a simple rhythm: every step up — million to billion, billion to trillion — is a factor of 1,000. So the converter uses one relationship in two directions:

This converter follows the short scale, used in the United States, the United Kingdom, and most international finance, where billion = 10⁹ and trillion = 10¹². Some continental European countries use the long scale, where a billion is 10¹² and a trillion is 10¹⁸ — the same words, different numbers. Is 500 billion the same as half a trillion?

Yes. Divide by 1,000:500÷1000=0.5500 \div 1000 = 0.5. So 500 billion is exactly 0.5 trillion — half a trillion.

Does the calculator work with negative numbers?

Yes. The same relationship holds on both sides of zero, so a value like 3 billion-3\ \mathrm{billion} converts to 0.003 trillion-0.003\ \mathrm{trillion} with no error.

Why does the scientific-notation field show a long number?

It starts at ×100\times 10^{0}, which simply shows the full value as written. Pick a higher power of ten — such as ×109\times 10^{9} for a billion-scale figure — and the same number collapses to a short mantissa like1.91.9.
