Introduction / overview
Gematria is the practice of turning a word, phrase, or sentence into a number by adding up the value of each of its letters. Type any text and this calculator instantly shows you three scores — Jewish, English, and Simple gematria — plus a per-letter breakdown so you can see exactly how the total was built.
One input, three systems: the same text scores differently in each system because the letter values come from different tables. The result fields are read-only — they always follow from whatever you type.
People reach for a gematria calculator when they are studying numerology, exploring Hebrew and Kabbalistic traditions, comparing the numeric value of two names or phrases, or just satisfying a curiousity about what their own name adds up to. The calculator handles plain words, whole sentences, and even Hebrew letters — uppercase and lowercase are scored the same.
How to use / quick start
Step-by-step
- Type a word, phrase, or sentence into the Text to translate field — for example .
- Each result section (Jewish, English, Simple) shows two read-only boxes: the Value, which is the total score, and the Letter values breakdown such as .
- Read the score, or open one of the collapsible sections to see how every letter contributed.
Worked example: “hello”
With the three systems give three different totals, each simply the sum of its letter values:
The calculator returns Simple 52, English 312, and Jewish 103 — exactly matching the breakdown it prints for you. You can always verify a score by adding up the numbers in the Letter values box.
Calculation method
Every gematria score is a simple sum over the characters of the text, using a value table that depends on the system:
Simple gematria
Uses the alphabet position: through .
English gematria
Takes six times the alphabet position: through .
Jewish (Hebrew) gematria
Follows the traditional table, which mixes Latin letters with their Hebrew-letter partners, so values are not sequential — note the jumps at , , and .
Letter values table
The full table the calculator uses for Latin letters:
| Letter | Simple | English | Jewish |
|---|---|---|---|
| a | 1 | 6 | 1 |
| b | 2 | 12 | 2 |
| c | 3 | 18 | 3 |
| d | 4 | 24 | 4 |
| e | 5 | 30 | 5 |
| f | 6 | 36 | 6 |
| g | 7 | 42 | 7 |
| h | 8 | 48 | 8 |
| i | 9 | 54 | 9 |
| j | 10 | 60 | 600 |
| k | 11 | 66 | 10 |
| l | 12 | 72 | 20 |
| m | 13 | 78 | 30 |
| n | 14 | 84 | 40 |
| o | 15 | 90 | 50 |
| p | 16 | 96 | 60 |
| q | 17 | 102 | 70 |
| r | 18 | 108 | 80 |
| s | 19 | 114 | 90 |
| t | 20 | 120 | 100 |
| u | 21 | 126 | 200 |
| v | 22 | 132 | 700 |
| w | 23 | 138 | 900 |
| x | 24 | 144 | 300 |
| y | 25 | 150 | 400 |
| z | 26 | 156 | 500 |
Hebrew letters are also recognized, and they score their traditional values (for example , ). There is no reverse direction: because many texts share a score, the calculator never tries to reconstruct text from a number.
Real-world examples
Two phrases can land on the same number
Because gematria is just a sum, completely different texts frequently collide. In the English system, and both total 942. In traditional Hebrew gematria, the word for wine (יין) and the word for secret (סוד) both add to 70 — a classic example of how gematria was used to draw connections between words.
A Hebrew word: “chai” (alive)
The Hebrew word for “alive”, חי, is made of two letters — ח and י — so its Jewish gematria is 18, which is why 18 is considered a lucky number in Jewish tradition. Type חי into the calculator and the Jewish Value reads 18.
Checking a longer phrase by hand
For a phrase such as , the Jewish table gives each letter a value:
Adding them up gives , which is exactly what the calculator shows in the Jewish Value box.
Tips & best practices
Case never matters
and score the same. There is no need to convert case before calculating.
Spaces and punctuation score zero
The calculator trims leading and trailing spaces automatically, and any internal spaces or punctuation add nothing to the total — they appear as in the breakdown.
Equal scores do not mean equal meaning
Two words can sum to the same number purely by coincidence. Gematria is a cultural and interpretive practice, not a claim that the words are mathematically related.
Use the Letter values box to verify
It is the fastest way to confirm a total — every contribution is listed in order, and adding them should always match the Value.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the same word get three different scores?
Each system uses a different value table. Simple gematria uses the alphabet position, English gematria uses six times the position, and Jewish gematria follows the traditional mixed Latin/Hebrew table. The same letters therefore add up differently.
Do Hebrew letters count in all three systems?
No. Hebrew letters carry their traditional values only in the Jewish system. In the Simple and English systems they score zero, as do spaces, digits, and punctuation.
Can I get the text back from a score?
No. Because many different texts can produce the same total, a score cannot be reversed into a unique word or phrase. The calculator always works in one direction: text in, scores out.
Limitations
Gematria is a traditional and interpretive practice, not a scientific or mathematical system. Scores depend entirely on the value table used, and many different systems exist, so a number from this calculator is only meaningful within the specific table shown. An equal score does not imply that two words are related. The Hebrew values here follow one common table; other traditions may assign different values, especially to final-form Hebrew letters.
