How to interpret the results

  • Pick the exact item, not the category

    Olive oil, vegetable oil, and butter all sit in “Oils” but have different densities. Choosing the specific item is what keeps the result accurate — the category alone is not enough.

  • Use a measured density when it matters

    The item list stores typical values, not laboratory-grade ones. For a recipe you'll repeat, use the Others category with the density printed on the label (or measured) for the most reliable conversions.

  • Remember the water anchor

    1 US gallon of water weighs about 3.785 kg (roughly 8.34 lb). Keep that in mind as a sanity check: anything much heavier per gallon is denser than water, anything much lighter is not.

  • US gallons and UK gallons are different

    A UK gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon. The tool supports both, so check which unit your recipe, container, or supplier actually uses before you rely on the number.

  • Dense things take less space

    For the same weight, honey and corn syrup need far less volume than flour or oil. If a result looks surprisingly small or large, check the density you're using — it explains the size of the gap.

Why the number 3.785412?

The US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, which works out to precisely 3.785411784 liters. The converter uses the rounded figure 3.785412 that cooking and reference tools commonly use. The difference is far smaller than a single drop per gallon, so it never affects practical results.

The neat part: density in g/mL\mathrm{g/mL} has the same number as density in kg/L\mathrm{kg/L}. Since a US gallon holds 3.785412 liters, multiplying liters by a density in kg/L gives kilograms — which is exactly what the formula above does.
