Introduction / overview

The Knots to mph Converter answers one deceptively simple question: a chart, forecast, or flight log just gave me a speed in knots — what does that mean on land? Type the value into any of the five fields inside the Speed Conversion card and the other four fill in instantly: miles per hour, kilometers per hour, feet per second, and meters per second.

This is a pure unit translation, not an estimate: one knot is exactly one nautical mile per hour, and the nautical mile has been internationally defined as exactly 1,852 meters since the mid-20th century. Calculation method

All five fields describe the same physical speed through one shared reference: meters per second. Each unit contributes its own exact factor, and the converter moves between them by scaling that shared value:

Dividing knot by mile-per-hour factors gives the headline number:

Notice this ratio never terminates — unlike the clean 1.852 km/h per knot, the mph figure carries an endless decimal tail. That is why different references print slightly different digits (1.15078, 1.150779, …); they are all rounding the same exact ratio. Don’t treat a knot as a regular mile per hour

The nautical mile (1,852 m) is about 15% longer than the statute mile (1,609.344 m). Confusing the two understates every wind or vessel speed by that margin — enough to matter for fuel, arrival time, and safety margins.

Frequently asked questions

Is one knot faster than one mile per hour?

Yes. One knot equals 1.1507791.150779\ldots mph, so a knot is roughly 15% “faster” than a mile per hour. A vessel doing 20 kn is traveling closer to 23 mph, not 20.

Why do ships and aircraft still measure speed in knots?

Tradition meets geometry. The nautical mile was historically tied to the Earth’s coordinates — one minute of latitude — so distances on nautical charts mesh naturally with position. The modern international definition fixes it at exactly 1,852 m, preserving that near-match while giving every country the same yardstick. Aviation inherited the convention because it shares charts, procedures, and weather reporting with maritime practice.

What happens if I enter a negative speed?

The field flags it with “Speed cannot be negative.” and leaves the other fields empty. Speed is distance per time and cannot be less than zero — if you are tracking a velocity component pointing backward, convert its magnitude here and handle direction separately.
