Introduction / overview

The Mbps Calculator converts a data-transfer rate between megabits per second (Mbit/s) and megabytes per second (MB/s), and between 26 bit- and byte-based units in total. Every field is editable: type a number into any one of them and the rest update at the same time, so you never have to divide by 8 or shift prefixes by hand.

The two top fields are the pair that matters most: Megabits (the bit-based speed a plan advertises) and Megabytes (the byte-based speed that matches actual file transfers). The two sections below let you read the same rate in other bit units — bit, kbit, Gbit — or byte units — B, kB, GB — whichever your source or your question uses.

It is the tool to reach for when you are comparing broadband packages, checking a speed-test result, reading a network spec sheet, or estimating how fast a file will move between two machines. The core conversion is exact — the relationship between bits and bytes is a clean factor of eight — so no rounding is introduced by the math itself.

Example — convert a 300 Mbit/s plan

Type 300300 in the Megabits field. Because one byte holds exactly 8 bits, the same speed in megabytes is eight times smaller:

The Megabytes field shows 37.5 MB/s. That is the realistic ceiling for file downloads on this connection before real-world overhead — the number most people are actually looking for when they ask “how fast is my internet?”

Calculation method

The calculator is built on one exact relationship: a byte holds exactly 88 bits, so a byte-based speed is always eight times smaller than the bit-based speed it came from:

The unit rows in the two lower sections convert the same underlying rate into the unit you select. Every bit row stores its value in megabits and every byte row in megabytes, so moving to another unit is a simple factor change — for example, 1 Gbit=1000 Mbit1\ \mathrm{Gbit} = 1000\ \mathrm{Mbit} and 1 kbit=0.001 Mbit1\ \mathrm{kbit} = 0.001\ \mathrm{Mbit}:

Variables

  • Mbit/s\mathrm{Mbit/s} — the rate in megabits per second (bit-based)
  • MB/s\mathrm{MB/s} — the rate in megabytes per second (byte-based)
  • Ns,NtN_s, N_t — the numeric value in the source and target units
  • fs,ftf_s, f_t — the number of base units in one source and target unit

Every field is a valid starting point. Enter a value in the Megabytes field and the Megabits field — plus every bit and byte row — re-derives from it, so the conversion runs just as easily in either direction. Because the factors here are clean integers or exact decimal values, results are never rounded to make them fit.

Bits vs. bytes and the two prefix families

The most common source of confusion is the case of the b\mathrm{b}. A lowercase b\ \mathrm{b} means bit (Mbit, kbit, Gbit), and an uppercase B\ \mathrm{B} means byte (MB, kB, GB). Because one byte holds eight bits, the same speed looks eight times bigger in bits than in bytes:

The unit lists in this calculator also show two prefix families side by side. Decimal prefixes — kbit, Mbit, GB — step by powers of 10001000 and are the convention used by networking and most speed specs. Binary prefixes — Kibit, MiB, GiB — step by powers of 10241024 and appear where storage or operating systems count in binary multiples:

These conventions — the 1 B=8 bit1\ \mathrm{B} = 8\ \mathrm{bit} relationship and the binary prefixes kibi, mebi, and gibi — are documented side by side in the NIST reference on binary prefixes.

Why downloads never match the plan number

A “300 Mbps” plan advertises its speed in bits. Files are counted inbytes, so the raw ceiling is already eight times smaller — 37.5 MB/s — before any network overhead. When a speed test or download manager reports in MB/s, this is the figure you should compare against, not the 300 number.

Real-world examples

Compare a gigabit upgrade to your current plan

You are on a 300 Mbit/s package and considering the 1 Gbit/s (“gigabit”) tier. Type 300300 in the Megabits field, then 10001000 to see each in bytes:

The upgrade is about 12537.53.3\frac{125}{37.5} \approx 3.3 times faster on paper. Use that ratio to judge whether the price difference matches a real gain — keeping in mind that Wi-Fi and congestion usually lower both figures.

Estimate a nightly backup over a slow link

A remote site connects over a 10 Mbit/s line, and you want to know whether a 5 GB backup will finish overnight. Enter 1010 in Megabits to get the byte-based rate:

Frequently asked questions

Are Mbps and Mbit/s the same thing?

Yes — Mbps and Mbit/s are two ways of writing megabits per second, and this calculator treats them as identical. The uppercase matters across the whole family: MB/s\mathrm{MB/s} and MBps mean megabytes per second, which is eight times larger. If a number is written in bytes (uppercase B) and you need it in bits, or vice versa, that eightfold difference is exactly what the Megabits and Megabytes fields show side by side.

Can this calculator estimate download time or convert a file size?

It converts rates only — how many bits or bytes flow each second — not amounts. Turning a speed into a download time needs a file size as well (time = size ÷ rate). The 5 GB backup example above shows the reasoning; for the size conversion itself, the byte converter converts any amount between bytes, kilobytes, gigabytes, and bit units directly.

What is the difference between MB and MiB in the unit list?

A decimal megabyte is 106=100000010^6 = 1\,000\,000 bytes, while a binary mebibyte is220=10485762^{20} = 1\,048\,576 bytes — about 4.9% larger. Networking and most speed specifications use the decimal units (Mbit, MB), which is why the default rows use them. If your source counts in binary units, pick KiB, MiB, or GiB from the unit list so the comparison stays apples to apples.

Limitations

This calculator accepts non-negative rates only — entering a negative value shows a “cannot be negative” message and is not converted. It uses the decimal-prefix convention standard in networking (1 Mbit=106 bit1\ \mathrm{Mbit} = 10^6\ \mathrm{bit}) for the default Mbit and MB rows, and lists binary units (Kibit, MiB, GiB) separately so the two never get mixed up. It converts rates, not amounts: it cannot turn a speed into a download time without a file size. Finally, real-world throughput is almost always lower than the advertised rate because of network overhead, Wi-Fi conditions, and congestion — treat the results as the mathematical ceiling, not a guarantee.
