The mg to mL Calculator converts the weight of a liquid into its volume — and back again — as long as it knows what the liquid is. For water, milk, and cooking oil it applies a fixed density automatically. For a liquid medicine it reads the concentration from a short list of common products, so typing the dose in milligrams fills in how many milliliters to measure, or typing the volume gives the dose it contains.

Milligrams are a weight; milliliters are a volume. The two only convert through density (how much mass fits in a given space) or, for a solution, its concentration (how much of the active ingredient sits in each milliliter). That is why the same number of milligrams of water, milk, and cooking oil does not produce the same number of milliliters — and why a converter that ignored the liquid would quietly be wrong.

Once the density or concentration is known, the conversion is exact: m=ρ×Vm = \rho \times V is a simple, well-defined relationship, so the result depends only on the number you supply.

Quick example: a 400 mg dose of amoxicillin suspension

How to interpret the results

  • Highlighted value = calculated automatically from the other field. Edit either field and the derived one re-solves instantly.
  • Plain value = the number you typed. You decide which field is the input at any moment by typing into it.
  • Only non-negative values are accepted. A zero weight or volume is valid and simply converts to zero; a negative entry is rejected with an error.

Tips & best practices

  • Read the label concentration correctly

    A label that says “400 mg/5 mL” means 400 mg of drug in every 5 mL, or 80 mg/mL80\ \mathrm{mg/mL}. Divide the milligrams by the milliliters to get the per-milliliter figure the calculator uses.

  • Measure with the device that came with the medicine

    Use the marked syringe, dropper, or cup supplied with the product. A kitchen spoon is not a measuring tool — a difference of a few milliliters can matter for a medicine.

  • Match the volume units

    US and UK fluid ounces are not the same (29.57 mL29.57\ \mathrm{mL} versus 28.41 mL28.41\ \mathrm{mL}), and a tablespoon is 15 mL while a teaspoon is 5 mL. Choose the unit your container actually uses.

  • Keep the water anchor in mind

    Water is 1,000 mg/mL, so 1 mL of water weighs 1,000 mg and 100 mg is 0.1 mL. Use that as a sanity check: anything with a density far from 1,000 mg/mL is simply not water.

  • Custom lets you enter the real value

    If the liquid isn't in the list, choose Custom and type the concentration or density from the label — that gives a more reliable result than matching it to a similar-sounding preset.

  • Zero is a legal answer

    A zero weight or volume simply converts to zero and is fine. Only negative values are rejected — clear the field and re-enter if you see an error.

Everything the tool does rests on one relationship between mass, density, and volume. It simply solves the equation for whichever field you did not type into, working in milligrams, milligrams per milliliter, and milliliters so the units line up without extra steps.

To find the weight in milligrams, multiply the density in mg/mL by the volume in mL:

Why the units always line up

The tool works with mass in mg\mathrm{mg}, density or concentration in mg/mL\mathrm{mg/mL}, and volume in mL\mathrm{mL}. Multiply the first and third and the milliliters cancel, leaving milligrams; divide and the milligrams cancel, leaving milliliters. No hidden scaling factor is needed, which is why results stay exact to the digits shown.
