Introduction / overview

The m/s to km/h Converter turns a speed into every common unit at once: meters per second, kilometers per hour, miles per hour, feet per second, and knots up top, plus 18 more units — from kilometers per second to feet per day, including light speed and the Beaufort wind scale — in the “More conversion options” section.

Every field is editable. Type a number into any one of them and all the others update at the same time — you never multiply or divide by 3.63.6,518\frac{5}{18}, or anything else by hand.

The conversion factors the calculator uses are exact definitions, so converting a value never adds error — the number you get is the same speed, just written in a different unit.

Example — a sprinter’s top speed

A fast sprinter reaches about 10 m/s10\ \mathrm{m/s}. Type 10 in Speed in meters per second, and the kilometers-per-hour field shows the same pace on the more familiar road scale:

Calculation method

Every unit is converted through one shared base: meters per second. To convert a speed, the calculator first expresses it in m/s\mathrm{m/s}, then re-expresses that value in the target unit. If fsf_s is the number of m/s in one source unit and ft\ f_t the number of m/s in one target unit:

The main factors come straight from the definitions of the units. A kilometer is 1000\ 1000 meters and an hour is 36003600 seconds; a mile is exactly 1609.344\ 1609.344 meters; a foot is exactly 0.30480.3048 meters; and a nautical mile — the basis of the knot — is exactly 18521852 meters:

Because these factors are exact, converting between two units is reversible and consistent: enter a value in the miles-per-hour field and every other field re-derives from it, exactly as it does when you start from meters per second. The speed of light is included as the exact SI value, 299792458 m/s299\,792\,458\ \mathrm{m/s}, and is the only unit in the list fixed by a physical constant rather than a length-and-time definition.

The Beaufort field is not a simple multiplier

The Beaufort scale (B) describes wind force, and the calculator converts it with the common approximation v=0.836×B3/2 m/s\ v = 0.836 \times B^{3/2}\ \mathrm{m/s} (and its inverse B=(v/0.836)2/3\ B = (v/0.836)^{2/3}). Unlike every other unit in the list, this is a curved relationship, so the m/s value grows faster than linearly as the force number rises. It is an approximation rather than an exact definition, and it lines up with the official NOAA Beaufort force ranges published by the National Weather Service / SPC.

Real-world examples

Compare a physics result with a road speed

You measure a toy car crossing a 2020-meter track in 2\ 2 seconds. That is a speed of 10 m/s10\ \mathrm{m/s} — but to picture it against traffic, you want it in kilometers per hour. Enter 10 in the m/s field:

In one field you can now read that the little car moves as fast as a 36 km/h road vehicle, or 22.3694 mph in imperial units.

A 100 km/h speed limit in m/s, mph, and wind terms

Enter 100 in Speed in kilometers per hour and every field updates. The m/s figure is the one physics and wind reports use, the mph figure the one US drivers recognize, and the Beaufort row tells you how strong that same speed feels as wind:

The same 100 km/h reads about 54 kn, and in the other-units section it lands at roughly Beaufort force 10 — a storm, per the NOAA scale — which is why converting a hurricane’s wind speed into km/h can be such a sobering comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert km/h to m/s without the calculator?

Multiply by 518\frac{5}{18}, which is the same as dividing by 3.6\ 3.6. For example, 100 km/h×518=27.7778 m/s\ 100\ \mathrm{km/h} \times \frac{5}{18} = 27.7778\ \mathrm{m/s}. Going the other way, multiply m/s by 3.63.6 to get km/h — the calculator does both directions automatically whichever field you type into.

Are knots and miles per hour the same thing?

No. A knot is one nautical mile per hour, and a nautical mile is exactly 1852\ 1852 meters — noticeably longer than the statute mile of 1609.344\ 1609.344 meters behind mph. A knot is therefore about 1.15\ 1.15 mph, so the same speed always reads roughly 15% higher in knots than in mph. Nautical and aviation charts use knots for this reason.

I have a distance and a time — how do I find the speed to convert?

Speed is distance divided by time, so you can work it out yourself. If you would rather let a calculator do that step first, the velocity calculator computes speed from a distance and a time — then bring that result back here to switch it into whatever unit you need.

Limitations

This calculator converts speeds that are zero or positive — entering a negative value shows a “Speed cannot be negative.” message and is not converted. The Beaufort field uses a standard approximation formula rather than an official measurement, so treat its output as a close mapping to wind force, not a certified wind reading; the NOAA scale is the reference for what each force means. Finally, converting a unit never changes the real-world quantity — a 100 km/h reading is the same speed as 27.7778 m/s — so the results are only as accurate as the number you enter, and no conversion can correct a measurement that was wrong to begin with.
