Introduction / overview

Nm to in-lbs Converter turns a single torque value into its equivalent across the units you actually see on torque wrenches, service manuals, and spec sheets — newton-meters and inch-pounds up front, plus foot-pounds, kilogram-force meters, and more under “More conversion options”.

Type a torque in any field and every other unit recalculates instantly. You can start from Nm and read in-lbs, or start from in-lbs and read Nm — the conversion works in both directions.

This is the tool for the common mismatch where a component's spec is written in newton-meters but the torque wrench in front of you is marked in inch-pounds (or the other way around). The extra field covers less frequent torque units, including lbfft\mathrm{lbf\cdot ft} (foot-pounds), kgfm\mathrm{kgf\cdot m}, and J/rad\mathrm{J/rad}.

How to use / quick start

Example: converting 10 N·m to inch-pounds

Type 1010 in the Newton-meters field. The calculator multiplies by the exact inch-pounds-per-newton-meter factor:

Calculation method

Internally, every torque is carried in newton-meters, the SI unit for torque. The newton-meter is a derived SI unit combining the metre, kilogram, and second. If TsT_s is the value you entered and fsf_s is the number of newton-meters in one source unit, the shared torque is:

How to read the method:

  • TNmT_{\mathrm{N\cdot m}} is the shared torque expressed in newton-meters.
  • fsf_s and ftf_t are the exact newton-meters-per-unit factors, such as 0.1129848290276167 Nm/lbfin0.1129848290276167\ \mathrm{N\cdot m / lbf\cdot in} or 1.3558179483314004 Nm/lbfft1.3558179483314004\ \mathrm{N\cdot m / lbf\cdot ft}.
  • Because every editable field is a starting point, the same relationship works from in-lbs or any “other” unit back to Nm, not only from Nm outward.

Why isn't 10 N·m exactly 88.5 in-lbs?

The familiar rule of thumb uses a rounded factor of 8.858.85. The exact value this calculator uses is 8.8507457913 lbfin/Nm8.8507457913\ \mathrm{lbf\cdot in / N\cdot m}, so 10 Nm10\ \mathrm{N\cdot m} is really 88.5075 lbfin88.5075\ \mathrm{lbf\cdot in}. The difference is negligible for small torques, but it grows with the value, and for precision work the exact factor matters.

Can I convert foot-pounds with this calculator?

Yes. Open More conversion options and choose lbfft\mathrm{lbf\cdot ft} (or its alias ft-lbs\mathrm{ft\text{-}lbs}). Entering a value there updates the newton-meter and inch-pound fields at the same time.

Limitations

  • Torque has a direction, so negative values are meaningful (for example, counterclockwise vs. clockwise). This converter keeps the sign visible instead of treating negatives as errors.
  • Gravity-based units such as kgfm\mathrm{kgf\cdot m} and lbfft\mathrm{lbf\cdot ft} are tied to the standard reference gravity of 9.80665 m/s29.80665\ \mathrm{m/s^2} and the international pound. They are exact to the precision shown, but they describe those reference definitions, not a local measurement.
  • This tool converts torque units only. It does not estimate bolt clamp force, fastener strength, or whether a torque value is safe for a given part — those depend on material, thread, and application factors outside a unit converter.
