Both 1:1 relationships come from the same physics: the definition of mechanical work. When a constant force acts through a displacement in the same direction, the work done is:

The newton-meter is numerically identical to the joule because both measure the same quantity — work or energy. The distinction is mainly contextual: is preferred when discussing torque, while is the standard SI unit for energy in thermodynamics, electrical engineering, and general physics.
Why the two groups are independent
The force section converts (energy per unit length), while the energy section converts (energy as a product of force and distance). These are mathematically distinct quantities — has different units than .
Limitations
- •1:1 identity only. The force section uses exactly, with no approximation. The energy section uses exactly. Conversion factors for other units (e.g., ) are exact definitions or high-precision constants.
- •No force-to-energy cross-conversion. You cannot convert newtons directly to joules, because force and energy have different dimensions. You need to know the displacement to relate them. This calculator handles each dimension separately.
- •Static force assumed. The formula assumes the force acts in the same direction as the displacement. If the force is at an angle, only the component along the displacement contributes to work.
