Pints measure how much space something takes up; pounds measure how heavy it is. Because a pint of water, a pint of flour, and a pint of honey all weigh different amounts, the conversion is only meaningful when an ingredient's density is known. How to interpret the results

  • Blue-highlighted value = automatically calculated. It was derived from the other field and stays in sync as you keep editing.
  • Normal (dark) value = the number you typed yourself. You can flip which field is the input by typing into the other one.
  • Both fields expect non-negative values, because volume and weight of food can't be negative. A density of zero is treated as “unknown” — it can't be used to convert a weight back to a volume.

2) A 2 lb bag of flour in pints

Background: The recipe wants flour in pints, but the bag is sold by weight.

What it means: A 2 lb bag of all-purpose flour fills about 3.6 pints. Flour is much lighter than water, so the same weight takes up far more space.

3) UK pints aren't US pints

Background: A British recipe calls for 5 pints of water, but your measuring jug is US.

What it means: A UK pint is bigger than a US pint, so 5 UK pints weigh about 6.26 lb — noticeably more than 5 US pints (about 5.22 lb). Matching the unit to the recipe source matters.

4) Finding an unknown ingredient's density

Background: A jar from the farmers' market has no density label. You measure 2 US pints and the contents weigh 1 lb, and you want the density.

What it means: A density of about 0.48 g/mL is light for a liquid — close to cream or a thin dressing. Knowing the density lets you compare it with the built-in items or convert the rest of the jar in either direction.

Calculation method / formula explanation

The conversion multiplies the volume by the ingredient's density, then applies one fixed ratio that comes from the exact definitions of the US pint and the pound.

Pints to pounds

The weight in pounds equals the volume in US pints, times the density in g/mL, times the ratio of the US pint to the pound:

The two constants are exact: one US liquid pint is 473.176473 mL, and one pound is 453.59237 g — the same factors listed in the NIST Guide to the SI conversion factors. Since the ratio is about 1.0432, one US pint of water (density 1 g/mL) weighs about 1.043 lb.

Where the density comes from

Each item in the ingredient list carries a typical bulk density in g/mL. Water is 1.0, cooking oil is 0.88, all-purpose flour is 0.529, and honey is 1.381 — so the pint-to-pound ratio is never a single number for every food. The same formula works whether the answer is a weight or a volume; only which side you type into changes.

Density works in both directions too. In the Others category, enter a volume in pints and a weight in pounds and the calculator derives the density for you — handy for identifying an unlabeled ingredient. In the other categories, the density is simply set by the item you choose.

Tips & best practices

  • Match your measurement method

    The density values describe loose, level scoops of dry goods — not firmly packed cups. If a recipe explicitly says “packed,” the same volume will weigh noticeably more than the calculator shows.

  • Confirm the pint unit first

    Check whether your jars or recipe use US, UK, or US dry pints before trusting the result. The difference between US and UK pints is about 20%, which can tip a large batch.

  • Use Others for what isn't in the list

    For a new ingredient, choose Others and type a density in g/mL. Water is 1.0; most liquids sit between 0.9 and 1.1; flours and grains are much lower (0.4–0.6); sweet syrups are higher (around 1.3). A reasonable estimate still gives you a useful ballpark.

  • Weigh when precision matters

    For baking, a kitchen scale is still the gold standard — weight doesn't depend on how you scoop. Use this calculator when you need a quick estimate or when a recipe is written in pints but your scale is in pounds.

  • Keep the direction obvious

    Pints are the larger number for light foods (a pound of flour is over 3 pints), while pounds exceed pints for dense foods like honey. If a result looks off by an order of magnitude, you may have typed into the wrong field — just type into the other one to flip it.

Why does the pint-to-pound ratio change with the ingredient?

Because a pint is a volume and a pound is a weight. The link between them is density: a pint of honey (about 1.44 lb) packs more mass into the same space than a pint of flour (about 0.55 lb). The calculator applies each ingredient's density automatically.

Is a US pint the same size as a UK pint?

No. A US liquid pint is 473.176473 mL, while a UK pint is 568.26125 mL — about 20% larger. This calculator lets you switch between US, UK, and US dry pint units so the result matches the jar you're actually using.

Can I work out an ingredient's density?
