Introduction / overview

Weight Converter translates one mass value into equivalent values across metric, imperial/US, scientific, and astronomical units. It is useful when a label, specification, laboratory value, or scale uses a different unit from the one needed for your calculation.

The calculator treats “weight” as mass for unit conversion: enter a value in any available field, and the equivalent fields are recalculated automatically.

The three groups cover fixed metric fields for mg\mathrm{mg}, g\mathrm{g}, and kg\mathrm{kg}; imperial/US fields for oz\mathrm{oz}, lb\mathrm{lb}, and st\mathrm{st}; plus selectable scientific and astronomical references such as atomic mass units, particle rest masses, Earth masses, and solar masses.

How to use / quick start

  1. 1Choose the group containing the unit you know, then enter the value in its field.
  2. 2Read the equivalent values in the other groups. Each field represents the same underlying mass.
  3. 3For the “other” fields, select the scientific or astronomical unit that matches the result you want to report.

Example: converting one pound

Enter 1 lb1\ \mathrm{lb} in the pounds field. The calculator uses the exact international-pound factor declared for this tool:

The same mass is then shown in milligrams, grams, ounces, stones, and the currently selected fields in the other groups.

Calculation method

Internally, every field is converted through kilograms. If MsM_s is the entered value and fsf_s is the number of kilograms represented by one source unit, the common mass is calculated as follows:

How to read the method:

  • MkgM_{\mathrm{kg}} is the shared mass expressed in kilograms.
  • fsf_s and ftf_t are the declared kilogram factors for the source and target units.
  • You can enter any editable field, so the same relationship works in both directions rather than only from kilograms outward.

Limitations

  • This is a mass converter, not a force calculator. Physical weight as a force would also depend on local gravitational acceleration.
  • Troy ounces and ordinary ounces are different units. Use the troy-ounce field for precious-metal measurements rather than the ordinary ounce field.
  • Particle and astronomical masses are reference conventions declared by the calculator; they should not be mistaken for a laboratory measurement uncertainty or a gravitational-weight result.
  • Negative inputs are outside the accepted mass domain and are flagged instead of being treated as ordinary conversion values.
