Measure once, measure carefully
Volume multiplies your three measurements together, so a small error in one side grows into a bigger error in the result. Measure to the nearest centimeter (or half inch) for most jobs. If the box tapers or bulges, take the average of a few readings along each side.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Thinking 1 m³ = 100 L. It is — a meter is 10 decimeters, and .
- Thinking 1 m³ = 100 cm³. It is because a meter holds 100 centimeters along each of three directions ( ).
- Confusing m³ with m². Cubic meters measure volume (space inside), square meters measure area (a flat surface). One is not a conversion of the other.

A few practical boundaries
- Assumes a rectangular box. The volume formula only fits straight-sided boxes, rooms, and tanks. Cylinders, spheres, cones, and irregular loads need a different formula.
- Garbage in, garbage out. The answer is only as good as your measurements. With three sides multiplied together, a 5% error in each side becomes roughly a 15% error in volume.
- Volume is not weight. A cubic meter of air, water, and concrete all occupy the same space but weigh very differently. For weight, combine the volume with the material’s density.
- Results are for estimating. For shipping quotes, material orders, or structural planning, confirm final figures with the supplier or a qualified professional before committing.
