Introduction / overview

The Greek Gematria Calculator, also known as an isopsephy calculator, turns any word, name, or phrase into a single number. Every Greek letter has a fixed classical value — from α=1\alpha = 1 up through the hundreds to ω=800\omega = 800 and the archaic sampi at 900 — and the calculator adds them all together for you. You get both the running total and a letter-by-letter breakdown, so you can see exactly where the score comes from.

You can type in Greek letters directly, or just use Latin letters — they are transliterated to their Greek equivalents automatically, so test scores exactly like its Greek spelling would.

A quick example

Type the Latin word test. The calculator transliterates each letter (t → τ, e → ε, s → σ) and sums their values:

So test scores 805805. The two τ\tau each contribute 300 — repeated letters simply add their value again, just like counting.

Calculation method

The score is the sum of the value of every character in the text:

where S is the total score and v(cᵢ) is the value of the character at position i.

How the Greek letter values work

Greek numerals give each unit (1–9), each ten (10–90), and each hundred (100–900) its own letter — 27 values in all. The 24-letter alphabet is extended by three obsolete letters: stigma (ϛ) = 6, koppa (ϟ) = 90, and sampi (ϡ) = 900.

Latin letters are transliterated first

Type in Latin letters and the calculator maps each one to its Greek equivalent before scoring. The letter q\mathrm{q} has no equivalent, so it contributes 0. The mapping used:

A phrase with a space shows this clearly — Omni Calculator becomes Ο(70) μ(40) ν(50) ι(10) + space(0) + Κ(20) α(1) λ(30) κ(20) υ(400) λ(30) α(1) τ(300) ο(70) ρ(100), which totals 11421142.

Two things that might surprise you

Case doesn’t matter

Uppercase and lowercase letters score identically, so TEST, Test, and test all give 805.

Greek accents are ignored

Accented letters count as their base letter, so Καλημέρα and Καλημερα both total 205. Spaces and punctuation inside the text contribute 0.

Why does the Latin letter q give 0?

The transliteration table has no Greek equivalent for q (the Greek alphabet has no letter that matches it), so it simply contributes nothing to the total. Only the letters listed in the mapping produce values.

Will an accented Greek word change the value?

No. Accents are ignored, so Καλημέρα (with the accent on the epsilon) and Καλημερα (without it) both total 205. The calculator scores the base letter.

Is this the same as the Gematria calculator?

Not quite. This page uses the Greek isopsephy table (α = 1 … ϡ = 900). The separate Gematria Calculator on this site works with the Jewish (Hebrew), English, and Simple systems, which assign numbers differently — the same text will usually produce a different score in each system.

Limitations

  • The calculator scores Greek and Latin letters; characters from other alphabets, numbers, and symbols contribute 0.
  • It converts text into a number only — there is no reverse direction from a value back to a word.
  • Because case and accents are ignored, two different spellings can share the same total, which is expected for this kind of counting.
  • The numerical “meaning” people attach to a score is a matter of tradition and interpretation, not mathematics. This tool only computes the sum — it does not interpret the result and makes no claim that a word’s value carries hidden significance.
