Introduction / overview

Newton Meter Calculator converts a torque value between newton meters and pound-force feet — the two units you meet most often on torque specs — and between nine other torque units, from micronewton meters up to ton-force meters. Type a value in either field and the equivalent appears in the other field instantly.

Both fields work as a starting point. Type in N·m and read lbf·ft, or type in lbf·ft and read N·m — the conversion runs in both directions, so you never have to re-enter a number to flip the result.

This is the tool for the common mismatch where a service manual or spec sheet lists newton meters but the torque wrench in front of you reads pound-force feet (or the reverse). Because both fields share the same set of eleven units, you can also switch either field to kilogram-force meters, dyne centimeters, or ton-force meters without starting over.

Example: converting 50 N·m to pound-force feet

Say a fastener spec calls for 50 Nm50\ \mathrm{N\cdot m} but your torque wrench reads pound-force feet. Type 5050 in the Torque in newton meters field. The calculator divides by the exact number of newton meters in one pound-force foot:

Calculation method

Every value is carried internally in newton meters, the SI unit of torque. The newton meter is a derived SI unit built from the metre, kilogram, and second. If TsT_s is the value you entered and fsf_s is the number of newton meters in one unit of that field, the shared torque is:

How to read the method:

  • TNmT_{\mathrm{N\cdot m}} is the shared torque expressed in newton meters.
  • fsf_s and ftf_t are the exact newton-meters-per-unit factors, such as 1.3558179483314004 Nm/lbfft1.3558179483314004\ \mathrm{N\cdot m / lbf\cdot ft} or 9.80665 Nm/kgfm9.80665\ \mathrm{N\cdot m / kgf\cdot m}.
  • Because either field can be the starting point, the same relationship works from pound-force feet back to newton meters — not only from newton meters outward.

The conversion uses the exact factor rather than a rounded rule-of-thumb like 1.35581.3558, so the difference between the two units never grows as the value gets larger. When a value does not divide evenly, like 50÷1.355817948331400450 \div 1.3558179483314004, the preview is shortened for readability while the underlying torque keeps its full precision.

They share the same units — one newton meter is exactly one joule. But they describe different quantities: torque is a twisting force, while a joule measures work or energy. This calculator converts torque values, not energy, so a newton meter here always means torque.

Torque has a direction. A negative value simply means the turning action is in the opposite direction — say counterclockwise instead of clockwise — so it converts normally and is not treated as an error.

Limitations

  • This tool converts between torque units only. It does not judge whether a torque value is right for a given fastener, joint, or assembly — that depends on thread, material, lubrication, and the component's own specification.
  • Units built on gravity or the pound — kilogram-force meters, pound-force feet, and ton-force meters — use standard reference definitions. They are exact as reference values, not as a local measurement of gravity or weight.
  • Values that do not divide evenly produce repeating decimals and are shown rounded for readability. Negative values are directional, not errors.
