Introduction / overview

Nm to ft-lbs Converter turns a single torque value into its equivalent across the units you are most likely to meet on a torque wrench or a specification sheet — newton-meters and foot-pounds up front, plus kilogram-force centimeters, joules per radian, and kilopondmeters under “Other torque units”.

This is the tool for the everyday mismatch where a car or bicycle component is specced in newton-meters but the wrench you own is marked in foot-pounds (or the other way around). The result is the turning force you would measure, so a positive value is one rotational direction and a negative value is the opposite. You can read it straight off the field whose unit matches the tool or spec you are working with.

Calculation method

Internally, every torque is carried in newton-meters, the SI unit for torque. The newton-meter is a derived SI unit combining the metre, kilogram, and second. If TsT_s is the value you entered and fsf_s is the number of newton-meters in one source unit, the shared torque is:

How to read the method:

  • TNmT_{\mathrm{N\cdot m}} is the shared torque expressed in newton-meters.
  • fsf_s and ftf_t are the exact newton-meters-per-unit factors: 1.3558179483314004 Nm/lbfft1.3558179483314004\ \mathrm{N\cdot m / lbf\cdot ft}, 0.0980665 Nm/kgfcm0.0980665\ \mathrm{N\cdot m / kgf\cdot cm}, 9.80665 Nm/kgm9.80665\ \mathrm{N\cdot m / kgm}, and 1 Nm/(J/rad)1\ \mathrm{N\cdot m / (J/rad)}.
  • The foot-pound factor comes from the international pound (1 lbf=4.4482216152605 N1\ \mathrm{lbf} = 4.4482216152605\ \mathrm{N} exactly) times one foot (0.3048 m0.3048\ \mathrm{m} exactly).
  • Because every editable field is a starting point, the same relationship works from ft-lbs or any “other” unit back to Nm, not only from Nm outward.

Why isn't 10 N·m exactly 7.376 ft-lbs?

The familiar shortcut uses a rounded factor of 0.73760.7376. The exact factor this calculator uses is 0.7375621493 lbfft/Nm0.7375621493\ \mathrm{lbf\cdot ft / N\cdot m}, so 10 Nm10\ \mathrm{N\cdot m} is really 7.37562 lbfft7.37562\ \mathrm{lbf\cdot ft}. The difference is tiny for everyday values, but it grows with the torque, and for precision work the exact factor matters.

What does “kgm” stand for?

“Kgm” is a common shorthand for the kilopondmeter, also written kgfm\mathrm{kgf\cdot m} (kilogram-force meter). It is the torque from one kilogram of force at a one-metre lever arm, equal to 9.80665 Nm9.80665\ \mathrm{N\cdot m}.

Limitations

  • Torque has a direction, so negative values are meaningful (for example, counterclockwise vs. clockwise). This converter keeps the sign visible instead of treating negatives as errors.
  • Gravity-based units such as lbfft\mathrm{lbf\cdot ft}, kgfcm\mathrm{kgf\cdot cm}, and kgm\mathrm{kgm} are tied to the standard reference gravity of 9.80665 m/s29.80665\ \mathrm{m/s^2} and the international pound. They are exact to the precision shown, but they describe those reference definitions, not a local measurement.
  • This tool converts torque units only. It does not estimate bolt clamp force, fastener strength, or whether a torque value is safe for a given part — those depend on material, thread, and application factors outside a unit converter.
