Calculation method

Under the hood the nine fields share one count in base units — ordinary single units. Each field is defined by how many base units it contains, and conversion is a single multiply or divide. The engine keeps that base value consistent, so editing any field recomputes the rest.

Why some answers have decimals: Counts do not need to be whole. For example, 11 dozen equals 12/20=0.612/20 = 0.6 scores, and 11 score equals 20/1440.138920/144 \approx 0.1389 grosses. The converter shows the exact decimal rather than rounding to the nearest whole group.

Assumptions and validation

  • All fields must be zero or positive — negative group counts are treated as invalid. Empty stays empty until you enter a number.
  • No rounding to whole groups is applied; business rules about “must order whole dozens” are left to you to enforce with the decimal result.
  • All conversions are linear and reversible, so qAQbaseqBq_{A}\rightarrow Q_{\mathrm{base}}\rightarrow q_{B} produces the same result regardless of which field you start from.

Dozen vs. baker's dozen

A regular dozen is 1212. A baker's dozen is 1313, historically one extra item added to avoid short weight. They differ by about 8.3%8.3\% — small enough to cause ordering errors if you pick the wrong field.

Score

A score is 2020. It survives mainly in idioms (“four score and seven years ago” = 8787) and older documents. Double-check whether “score” in your source means exactly 20 or a rough tally — this converter uses 2020.

Gross and great gross

A gross is 1212 dozen = 144144; a great gross is 1212 gross = 17281728 (12312^{3}). Both are still quoted in bulk paper, fasteners, and haberdashery.

Decade here means 10 units

In this converter “Decades” means a grouping of 1010 identical items, not ten years. It is provided for completeness alongside the other conventional counts.

Enter the original quoted unit

Start from the number exactly as invoiced or listed, even if it is a decimal like 2.52.5 grosses. Converting a rounded intermediate value adds avoidable error.

Decimals are intentional

Values such as 0.60.6 scores for one dozen are correct. If your process requires whole groups, round explicitly after you read the converted value.

Watch the baker's-dozen trap

When comparing bakery or food-service quotes, confirm whether the price is per 12 or per 13. Using the wrong dozen can shift unit cost by almost a tenth.

Chain through base units for price math

To compare cost, divide price by the converted base-unit count rather than by the grouped quantity — that keeps per-unit cost comparable across gross, score, and dozen quotes.

Any field. The converter treats whichever field you edit as the source and re-derives the other eight from the same hidden base count, so you do not need to start from Units.

Why does converting 5 dozens show a decimal number of scores?

55 dozens = 6060 units. Dividing by 2020 gives 60/20=360/20 = 3 scores — whole in this case. Try 11 dozen: 12/20=0.612/20 = 0.6 scores. Decimals simply mean the count does not fill a whole group.

Limitations

  • This is a low-risk counting tool. It applies exact counting definitions (e.g., 1212 per dozen, 17281728 per great gross) and does not model price, waste, or supplier rounding rules.
  • Negative quantities are not allowed — the fields validate to zero or positive only. Empty stays empty until you enter a number, leaving no hidden defaults.
  • Display precision is a preview convenience: the underlying count keeps higher precision. Use the visible decimal to decide when to round up to the next whole dozen, gross, or score for ordering.
