Worked example — topsoil by the yard

Keep your tons straight
A metric ton is 1000 kg, a US short ton is 2000 lb, and a long (imperial) ton is 2240 lb — they are not interchangeable. Match the Mass unit to how your supplier actually quotes.
Measure a true cubic yard
