Watch the gallon unit
A UK gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon, and a US dry gallon about 16% larger. If a recipe, tank, or supplier is not explicit, confirm whether it means US or UK gallons before relying on the number.
Use a measured density when it matters

Keep the water anchor in mind
1 US gallon of water weighs about 8.35 lb. Use that as a sanity check: something much heavier per gallon is denser than water (honey, syrup, milk), something lighter is not (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel).

Where the constants come from
The US gallon is legally defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, which works out to 3.785411784 L, and the avoirdupois pound is defined as exactly 453.59237 g. So one US gallon of water (density 1 g/mL) weighs 3785.411784 ÷ 453.59237 = 8.345404 lb. These definitions come from the US and imperial gallon definitions and the international avoirdupois pound.
The other gallon units are handled the same way: a UK gallon is exactly 4.54609 L and a US dry gallon is exactly 4.40488377086 L, so switching the unit simply changes how many milliliters each gallon represents before the same density math runs.
Why density in g/mL works cleanly here
Because 1 mL of water has a mass of 1 g, a density in tells you the mass of one milliliter of that liquid. Multiplying the gallon's milliliters by that number gives grams, then dividing by 453.59237 converts to pounds. The same density value in equals the value in and , and a Custom density entered in is simply the same number scaled by 1000 — so all the tool's density units line up to the same base value.

What is density?
